Create Your Own Shimmering Illustration
Welcome to your creative moment ✨
These illustrations were designed as a space for free, intuitive creation.
No watercolor experience is needed.
This is not about technique. It’s about feeling.
You’re simply here to bring light onto paper… in your own way.
Before you begin, take a moment to truly observe your illustration.
Run your fingers over the paper. Notice the details. Let your inspiration rise naturally.
✨ Before you begin
Even without any watercolor experience, take a few minutes to connect with the gesture.
If this is your first time, try a quick test on thick paper (like watercolor paper):
- draw soft lines
- create small dots
- experiment with different amounts of water
👉 This moment is here to help you feel the texture, understand the flow… and build confidence.
Then, use the butterfly as your creative playground.
🎨 A gentle way to begin
- Lightly moisten your brush
- Pick up pigment (see tip below)
- Start by testing on the butterfly
- Apply soft, delicate touches
👉 Move slowly. Pause often. Let your eye guide you.
🦋 The butterfly — your creative playground
Before working on your illustration, start here.
This space is here for you to:
- explore your gesture
- understand water balance
- play with light and color
- create freely, without pressure
You can:
- add dots, lines, or textures
- follow shapes or invent your own
- experiment with soft blends or sharp details
👉 There is no such thing as a mistake here.
💧 The key element: water vs pigment
This is where the magic happens.
-
Less water + more pigment
→ luminous, defined, shimmering effect -
Too much water
→ soft, diluted, almost invisible result
👉 The essential gesture
Add a few drops of water onto your paint pan and let it sit for a moment.
Then work the pigment with your brush, applying gentle pressure — almost like polishing.
Stay with the pigment. Avoid adding more water.
👉 The more you work it, the richer and deeper the shimmer becomes.
💡 Follow the light
The shimmer reveals itself through light.
Tilt your card. Move it gently. Observe it from different angles:
- natural daylight
- soft lamp light
- direct light
👉 This is a living effect — it appears, disappears, and transforms with movement.
❓ Frequently asked questions
I feel lost, I don’t know where to start
Start with the butterfly.
It’s your safe space to explore and build confidence.
I can barely see anything
This can happen if:
- there isn’t enough pigment
- there’s too much water
- the light is too soft
👉 Try:
- loading your brush with more pigment
- moving into stronger light
- tilting your piece to catch reflections
The effect is intentionally subtle — it reveals itself over time.
The colors look too soft
You likely have too much water.
👉 Focus on working the pigment directly in the pan without adding water.
My brush leaves marks
This is completely normal at the beginning.
It often comes from:
- not enough pigment
- a gesture that’s still finding its flow
👉 With practice, your movement will naturally become smoother.
The paper is warping
This usually means there is too much water.
👉 Let it dry completely — it will naturally flatten again.
If needed, place it under a book once dry.
I feel like I’ve done too much
Pause.
Step back. Let it dry. Observe it in the light.
The result often evolves beautifully with time and movement.
👉 Next time: build in layers, slowly.
I don’t know when to stop
Take breaks.
Observe your piece from different angles.
When in doubt… stop.
You can always come back later.
Can I work on it over multiple sessions?
Absolutely.
You can return to your illustration anytime — even the next day.
Do I need to follow the original colors?
Not at all.
This illustration is a starting point.
You can follow it… or completely reinterpret it.
👉 This is your creation.
It doesn’t look like yours
That’s the beauty of it.
Every gesture, every choice, every touch of pigment creates something unique.
👉 This isn’t about copying. It’s about expressing.
I’m afraid of ruining it
You can’t ruin it.
These shimmering pigments are here to add light — never to take it away.
👉 And you always have your butterfly to explore freely.
How long does it take?
About one hour for an A5 illustration.
But this is your moment — take your time, pause, come back to it.
✨ A final note
Work gently.
Observe deeply.
Pause often.
Adjust intuitively.
👉 And above all… enjoy the experience.
